What's Happening in Ozaukee County
FEMA's Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study has led to significant changes in Ozaukee County's flood maps. FEMA's coastal study added new VE and AE zones along Ozaukee County's Lake Michigan coast. Port Washington's harbor area, lakefront properties, and areas along the Milwaukee River in the southern part of the county see expanded flood zone designations.
- Zone VE (Coastal High-Hazard): Areas subject to wave action of 3 feet or more during a base flood event. This is the highest-risk coastal zone.
- Zone AE (High-Risk): Areas with a 1% annual chance of flooding where base flood elevations have been determined.
- Zone X (Low-to-Moderate Risk): Areas outside the 1% annual chance floodplain. Flood insurance is not required but is still recommended.
Ozaukee County's Lake Michigan shoreline communities — including Port Washington, Cedarburg (eastern areas), Grafton, and the Village of Saukville — are impacted by the updated maps. New VE zones appear along the lakeshore bluffs and harbor areas.
What the FEMA Letter Looks Like
Letter of Final Determination (LFD)
FEMA issued a Letter of Final Determination on September 17, 2025, addressed to Ozaukee County community officials. This letter confirmed that new flood maps would take effect on March 17, 2026. You may have received a separate notification from your county or municipality about the map changes.
